"It is important to note that this trust is not evenly spread among all media outlets," the researchers said. "The strongest trust is in the traditional media. Those who watch more television are most likely to trust television, while computer users trust online media. Respondents who trust national media, print or internet, especially do so for the same reasons."
'The divide between trust in news and distrust in media'
The reason is that traditional media serve as "gatekeepers to information" and "gatekeepers of trust," the centre said.
"While the general distrust of the media is high, the trust in news is high, too," the researchers said. The divide between trust in news and distrust in media was broad.
While 88 percent of the respondents said they have heard about the allegations against Apple, which were made public in a New York Times investigation on Tuesday, only 28 percent of respondents said that the story was credible. On the other hand, 80 percent of respondents said they had heard about allegations against Google, only 15 percent said that the story was credible.
